Suppressive function of androgen receptor in bone resorption.

As locally converted estrogen from testicular testosterone contributes to apparent androgen activity, the physiological significance of androgen receptor (AR) function in the beneficial effects of androgens on skeletal tissues has remained unclear. We show here that inactivation of AR in mice using a Cre-loxP system-mediated gene-targeting technique caused bone loss in males but not in females....

Osteoblastic glutamate receptor function regulates bone formation and resorption.

Previous studies showed that a variety of bone cells express protein components necessary for neuronal-like glutamatergic signaling and implicated glutamate as having a role in mechanically induced bone remodeling. Initial functional studies concentrated on the role of glutamate signaling in bone resorption and provided compelling evidence to suggest that glutamate signaling through functional ...

P-231: Androgen Receptor Gene Expression in Azoospermia Men

Background: Androgens are critical steroid hormones in progression of spermatogenesis process and determine the male phenotype that their actions are mediated by the androgen receptor (AR), a member of the nuclear receptor superfamily. In the Androgen receptor, transactivation domain encoded by exon 1, DNA binding domain encoded by exons 2 and 3, hinge region encoded by part of exon 4, and C-te...

Androgen Receptor Expression and Function in Osteoclasts

We assessed androgen receptor (AR) expression in osteoclasts in vitro and in situ. Rat multinucleated osteoclasts expressed detectable AR protein in situ, and AR mRNA was detected in mouse and human derived osteoclast-like cells in vitro. Dihydrotestosterone treatment did not affect human osteoclast-like cell formation or resorption in vitro.
